Entertainment icon RuPaul has gagged and thrilled us for years with their various TV shows and films, with RuPaul's Drag Race and its many global variants being the most popular. Now the television host, producer, and actor's Emmy-winning media company, World of Wonder, is teaming up with independent studio Bleecker Street to make a yet-to-be-titled action-comedy feature. They'll be joined by Hairspray director Adam Shankman, who will be directing the new feature.
The action-comedy will be the first feature film project set in the RuPaulâs Drag Race universe. It will follow best friends and train stewardesses Tess and DeeDee. The two have decided to ditch their shifts on the Stank Rail, swapping it for the gorgeous and glitzy Glamazonian Express, which, as Baga Chipz would say, suits them much better.
However, things take a turn for the worse when a "Stormganzaâ threatens to derail the high-speed train and crash it into Los Angeles. Despite their humble beginnings, Tess and DeeDee have no choice but to team up with the snobby first-class attendants, as well as President Gagwell (RuPaul), to save the day. If you ask me, it sounds like a disaster movie, but one that will lead into the camp and comedy of drag. I'm here for it.
âDrag queens in charge of America's first-ever hyperspeed, transcontinental, non-denominational bullet train. What could possibly go wrong?â said World of Wonder co-founders Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato. âWhat the world needs now is a disaster movie so twisted it will blow your mind. We are delighted to welcome Bleecker Street and everyone aboard the most bonkers train in cinematic herstory.â
"President Judy Gagwell is the part I was born to play," RuPaul said. "Finally, a role I can sink my dentures into."
This is far from the first time RuPaul has starred in a film, having featured in my personal favorite movie of all time, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, but it's certainly the first that will be set in the Drag Race universe. Considering how much of a global phenomenon RuPaul's Drag Race is, nobody should be surprised if some very familiar faces turn up to add glamor and comedy to whatever bananas experience Shankman and RuPaul have cooked up.
The untitled disaster film will be released theatrically nationwide in 2026.
